Climate change, water and air pollution, deforestation, loss of species … these are just a few of the serious environmental challenges we face. Becoming aware of how we have exacerbated these issues is the first step toward a healthy planet; realizing we share the resources of our world with all living things is the next step; learning what part we can play to take care of our world can make a meaningful difference.

In her latest book, Replenishing the Earth: Spiritual Values for Healing Ourselves and the World, Nobel Peace Prize laureat, Dr. Wangari Maathai is looking to keep her mission of environmental sustainability as simple as possible:

“If we live in an environment that’s wounded — where the water is polluted, the air is filled with soot and fumes, the food is contaminated with heavy metals and plastic residues, or the soil is practically dust — it hurts us, chipping away at our health and creating injuries at a physical, psychological and spiritual level,” Maathai writes. “In degrading the environment, therefore, we degrade ourselves.”
