Memorial Day weekend marked the opening of the new Coney Island.

Throughout the years Coney Island had fallen into bad times.  The upkeep was lacking and the conditions of the rides and side attractions were dismal.  Coney Island was a place that you only wanted to visit in the daytime to avoid any possibility of crime. When it looked as if Coney Island was going to be shut down, the community and new investors stepped in to bring it back to life.  Quite a few of the old classic restaurants have been closed down to make way for new restaurants with healthier food and more variety in their offerings.

New rides have been ordered from Italy and are fantastic.  There is the Boardwalk Flight, a sky coaster that hurls you 100 feet into the air and leaves you swinging right over the boardwalk.  There is also a new Coney Island Raceway go-cart track for you to race your friends.

The Cyclone is still a must-ride as one of the few wooden roller coasters in America.  Scary? A bit, but it is a pretty tame roller coaster ride so I enjoyed it.  I did sit in the last seat on the coaster so I was tossed around quite a bit.  My partner kept his eyes closed the whole time and tried to curl up into a little ball.

With last year’s addition of four new rides and the plans for movie theater and more restaurant options, I feel like I am in a brand new place and I look forward to visiting again very soon.

If you live in the New York area or are planning a trip, be sure to visit this iconic Park.
