The images are haunting—the famous Jersey Shore, areas of Long Island, Staten Island, Queens, and Brooklyn, all devastated in the wake of this ferocious storm, with other communities harshly affected by floods. Months have passed but the work ahead is long and expensive. Money and manpower are needed in many areas where residents are trying to rebuild their homes and their lives.
Here are some organizations where you can donate money, supplies, or your time:
Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund was organized by Gov. and First Lady Christie for New Jersey residents affected the storm.
Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation has a hurricane relief fund to help residents of Staten Island; volunteer needs are also posted here.
United Way Hurricane Sandy Fund –100% of the funds donated will go directly to hurricane assistance and relief.
New York Cares posts volunteer manpower needs on an ongoing basis; check the site often for updates.
FEMA. Russian speaking volunteers are needed seven days a week to translate for FEMA reps at multiple locations in Coney Island and Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Email translate4fema@gmail.com for more information; register here to volunteer.
Save the Children has a special hurricane relief fund to assist children in New York/New Jersey; you can donate here.
First Responders Relief Fund – through the National Firefighters Endowment; benefits departments directly affected by helping to replace lost equipment or with financial aid. Donate securely here.
Other ways to help include:
Donate blood. Blood is needed to help victims of the hurricane and to replace what was lost when hospitals lost power. You can schedule an appointment to donate blood at New York Blood Center.
Donate shelter and furnishings. The Salvation Army is providing food trucks and shelter all around the east coast. You can donate money to The Salvation Army or you can donate used furniture and clothes that will be sold in The Salvation Army stores.
Donate food. Food and water is also being contributed by Feeding America. They have given thousands of pounds of food but more is still needed. You can donate at Feeding America.
Donate time. If you are in the area, you can also donate your time. You can find out how best to help at Samaritan’s Purse Volunteer Network.
