I have been in several ruts in my life. I start getting cranky and feel generally unmotivated. I kind of check out, prefer lying around and put things off that I know I need to get done. Getting out of a rut takes some effort but it is worth it. Here are some baby steps I take to get my engine going.
The first thing I do is force myself to make breakfast, one that I know I will love. I buy the ingredients for all of my favorites. Believe me, it is hard to take out the pots and pans, but once I take my first bite, I become happier. This little step may seem like nothing, but I have proved to myself that I can do something good for myself.
The next thing I do is go for a walk. Not a power walk, but an enjoyment walk. I wander around at a slow pace and space out. I look at buildings, smell flowers, wave to kids in strollers and stop to pet dogs. This reminds me of all the simple things in life I can enjoy.
Next I do the unspeakable, I look at my to-do list, choose one item I have been procrastinating about for a long time and do it. Now this item has been buzzing in my mind for a long time, reminding me that it has to be done and sucking all my energy. When it is done, I feel invincible. I can’t believe I actually fixed my closet door. The good mood created from doing these deeds motivates me to do more.
